This years derby is scheduled for June 28, 2008.

NY state has dedicated the last full weekend in June to be free fishing days. Thus this year our derby can reach even more families since a licence for the adults accompanying the children will not be required.

The goal of our derby is to reach as many children in the community as possible, not just the fortunate ones who have an adult in their lives that can actually afford a licence to legally take a child fishing. We have planned our derby on this date to include even the less fortunate children in the community. If you know a child who may enjoy a fun filled day fishing, sign them up!! If you know someone who may benefit from time spent with their child, Please encourage them to join us on this day and help Make A Difference In A Child’s Life.....Take a Child Fishing!

Derby Rules & Regulations

  • Check in begins at 7:00a.m. and closes at 9:00am. Children and accompanying adult must come to Nickle Creek Bait Shop prior to fishing between 7am and 9am for check in and to receive the morning goodie bag. Children Participating must be present at check in. Children not checked in will not be known as participating and will not have a pre packed goodie bag or participation certificate, this there-for would disqualify the child's participation simply because we did not know the child was actually participating. Pre-registering does not count as check in.

  • All participants must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Participant must catch their own fish. Normal adult teaching technics such as lessons or assistance in casting or reeling in a catch are more than acceptable. However adults catching fish for children with the intention of increasing the child's count for grand prizes, is un fair and teaches the child bad sportsmanship. PLEASE allow your child to learn from this wonderful family time experience by winning fairly.... If your child is going to take a grand prize home, let him/her earn it and feel proud that they did it themselves. Accompanying adults caught fishing for a participant, will result in the unfortunate disqualification of that participant from grand prizes. Let's keep it honest and fair, everyone is going home with a prize after all.

Our fishing derby is for children ages 2 -15 years of age. Birth Certificates (proof of age) must be presented for children aged 13 - 15, however we reserve the right to ask for proof of age in any age group.

Only Sunfish and Blue gill are eligible for counting and weighing. Absolutely NO other species will be counted or weighed.

Grand prize winners determined by total number of Sunfish/Bluegill caught, with a New York State regulation of 50 maximum. No amount over 50 Sunfish/Bluegill in combination will be counted.

Ties will be broken by total weight of catch, Size of fish will matter.

All fish presented for counting must be freshly caught, alive is preferred but not mandatory. No frozen or deteriorating fish will be accepted. Nickle Creeks owners and volunteers reserve the right to inspect fish for freshness, freezing or added weight, negative findings will result in the participants disqualification from grand prizes.

Counting begins at 1:00p.m. and ends promptly at 2:30p.m. please be sure you are in line no later than 2:00p.m. for counting so that all counting will be completed at 2:30p.m. Whether you are walking or driving, we will not be able to take counts after 2:30p.m. to keep things fair and running smooth.

NO awards or prizes will be given prior to award ceremony at 3:30p.m. Participants must be present to be eligible for prizes.

Tickets will be issued for food and drink to participants and ALL family members attending the celebration party at the time your fish counts are taken. We regret that we will be unable to replace lost/stolen tickets with new tickets, lost/stolen tickets will be replaced at a minimal fee of .25 cents each, additional tickets can be purchased for .25 each as well. (We hope that you understand that this is only because of the passers by in previous years who pulled over for free food and drink. This ticket format has proved to eliminate this from happening.)

Rules and Regulations are subject to change at anytime without notice, by Nickle Creek Bait & Tackle Shop.... (but it's not likely)
